Sino-German Research Network：Digitalization and Aging

Abstract:

Digitalization and aging are two megatrends that strongly affect the Chinese and German societies and economies. Digital technologies are fundamentally changing how we communicate, work, and do business. Scholars and practitioners propose huge efficiency and innovation potentials through digital technologies even though the consequences of digitalization for firms, industries, and whole societies remain vague and hardly predictable.

The aim of our research network is to study which strategies and structures firms in China and Germany need to realize the proposed digitalization advantages. Further, we are interested in the interplay of digitalization and aging, as digital technologies provide new opportunities for aging societies. Our research network is divided into two subgroups. Subgroup I focuses on the firm level. Taking an organizational and management perspective, it studies how manufacturing firms can manage their digital transformation to sustain competitiveness in the digital age. Subgroup II aims to research the impact of digital technologies in an aging society. Specifically, Subgroup II members research how digital technologies will improve the living conditions of elderly individuals and impact the Chinese and German healthcare system and industry. Beyond this, Subgroup II is interested in how elderly people use and accept the emerging digital technologies.

The comparison between China and Germany enables us to detect similarities and differences in strategies and structures promoting digital transformation. The research network will help us to gain a deeper understanding of how to manage digital transformation in the elderly societies of China and Germany. The Sino German Research Network will suggest a series of implications for policy makers and managers involved in digital transformation.

当前社会面临数字化和老龄化两大主流趋势，它们影响着中德两国社会和经济。数字化技术从根本上改变了我们沟通，工作和商业活动的方式。理论和实务工作者都提出了数字化技术在效率提升和创新方面的巨大潜力，但对企业，行业和整个社会而言，数字化的影响仍不确定且难以预测。

本研究组的目的是探究中德企业为实现预期的数字化优势所需的战略和结构。此外，本研究组致力于研究数字化与老龄化的联系及相互影响，例如数字化技术为老龄化社会提供了新的机遇。我们的研究组由两个专题小组组成。第一小组侧重于公司层面，从组织和管理角度进行研究，以解决制造业企业如何管理数字化转型以在数字化时代保持竞争力的研究问题。第二小组旨在研究数字技术对老龄化社会的影响。更准确地说，第二小组成员深入数字化技术将如何改善老年人的生活条件及如何影响中德医疗保健系统和行业的问题。同时，第二小组将探究老年人如何使用和接受新兴数字化技术的研究问题。

这两个小组间将进行大量的交流，互动和关联，因为两个小组的研究主题是相互交织的。中德之间的比较使我们能够发现两国促进数字化转型的战略和结构中的异同。该研究组将帮助我们更深入地了解如何管理中德老年化社会的数字化转型。此中德研究组将为参与数字化转型的政策制定者和管理者提出一系列管理意涵。
